San Quirico, the “drawing room” of Orcia Wine

27 January 2016

The Francigena route, Chigi Palace, the Horti Leonini gardens, the Bagno Vignoni spa and breathtaking scenery are the setting for the Orcia Doc wineries

San Quirico d'Orcia_festa olio orciaSan Quirico d’Orcia in the heart of the Val d’Orcia and its Artistic, Natural and Cultural Park is one of the twelve municipalities in southern Tuscany where Orcia wine is produced, and thanks also to the presence of excellent spas has become an exclusive tourist destination.

Probably Etruscan in origin, San Quirico is surrounded by rolling hills, olive groves and vineyards, a perfect spot where, over a period of a thousand years, the work of farmers has designed a wondrous landscape which obtained the UNESCO heritage listing in 2004.

A real drawing room, with the Collegiata Church dedicated to saints Quirico and Giulitta, Chigi Palace with its frescoed rooms and the Horti Leonini, an original Italianate garden dating back to mid 16th century, the historic center is divided by the famous Francigena Route. Witness to the passing of pilgrims going to and from Rome is the presence of the Ospedale della  Scala where they were offered hospitality.

A short way away is Bagno Vignoni, a unique medieval spa still intact. This ancient hamlet is situated around a Belvedere_San Quirico d'Orcia vinosquare which is a large pool where the hot thermal waters of volcanic origin emerge. Over the centuries illustrious people enjoyed the beneficial properties of the water, such as Pope Pius 11, Saint Catherine of Siena and Lorenzo de ’Medici, to name a few.

Within the territory of San Quirico there are two wineries associates of the Consortium of Orcia wine where you can taste great Orcia Doc and Igt wines. If you are in San Quirico you can visit:

Sampieri del Fà Brogi: the only winery situated inside the historic center, close to the entry into the village along the Francigena Route.

Sante Marie di Vignonisituated at the foot of the village of Vignoni with its tower, in a dominating position over the splendid Val d’Orcia.

Every year in April  the township of San Quirico, in collaboration with the Consortium Orcia,  organizes the chief event dedicated to wine in our territory, “ORCIA WINE FESTIVAL”.

Between art, culture and spas our wineries hope to see you, let you enjoy our spectacular scenery, maybe at sunset, with a good glass of Orcia wine
