Art exhibition of Senese Painting in Val d’Orcia
12 July 2017From the 18 March to 30 September San Quirico d’Orcia, Pienza and Montepulciano have on show the art exhibition “Il buon secolo della pittura senese. Dalla Maniera moderna al Lume Caravaggesco”
(The good century of Senese painting, from the modern manner to the Caravaggio Light expression).
It is a great exhibition, unique in its kind, on show in three extraordinary towns in the province of Siena, with San Quirico d’Orcia and Pienza in the heart of the Artistic, Natural and Cultural Park of the Val d’Orcia, home to the production of the Orcia Doc Wine.
The title of the exhibition is taken from a phrase used by the abbot Luigi Lanzi, an art historian who lived between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries , dedicated to a specific historical period which went from the beginning of the XVI to mid XVII century when art in Siena was at its highest, with excellent artistic personalities who even today are not well known to the general public.
This led to the realization of a “touring exhibition”. In fact, taking inspiration from a local masterpiece, each town dedicates a section to an important Senese artist and his environment.
Every sector provides an itinerary to discover other equally significant works which for various reasons have remained in their original places. This solution allows visitors to complete their visit ideally with the added value of discovering a splendid land, preserved magnificently. All the works exhibited come from prestigious public and private collections, churches and religious institutions with the purpose of giving visitor the most exhaustive possible vision of a somewhat forgotten great century.
The First Section
Domenico Beccafumi, the artist in his youth.
Montepulciano, Museo Civico Pinacoteca Crociani
The Second Section
From Sodoma to Riccio: Senese painting in the last ten years of the Republic
San Quirico d’Orcia, Palazzo Chigi Zondadari
The Third Section
Francesco Rustici called “Il Rustichino”, a gentle type of Caravaggio style painting and naturalism in Siena
Pienza, Conservatorio S. Carlo Borromeo
This exhibition was included in the events of the Orcia Wine Festival which took place as usual in April in San Quirico d’Orcia. San Quirico was a real cultural “drawing room” where art and good wine found the perfect mix.
