It’s the time when grapes change colour in the Orcia vineyards
17 August 2016In the vineyards the bunches of grapes are beginning to change colour, the phase where the grapes start to ripen
In this period the vines of the Orcia denomination, spreading from the Crete Senesi to Val d’Orcia, are undergoing transformation. If you happen to go for a walk near the vineyards you’ll notice one of the basic phases of the annual cycle, the colour changing of the ripening grapes, veraison, called in Italian “invaiatura”.
“Invaiatura” is a phase that lasts between 20 and 50 days. During the herbaceous phase which starts with the “allegagione” meaning the passage from the flower to the fruit, the grape increases in weight and volume, reaching its maximum green weight. Then it starts to change colour: on white grape vines the green fruit begin to turn yellow while the red grapes turn from green to red. In the meantime the fruit starts to accumulate sugar and lose acidity.
Once the bunch of grapes is ripe it’s harvesting time!
