Are wine-producing and wine-growing digital? Image Line replies
2 December 2016Data from Image Line and Nomisma show the wine producing evolution towards the digital world
Image Line is a Hi-Tec Italian firm working with information technology at the service of agricultural concerns, and Nomisma is a well-known company of economic studies. They have carried out important research regarding the evolution of agriculture towards an already visible future where technology co-operates with man.
Through various interviews made with farmers and technicians a detailed panorama has emerged of digital technology in the field of agriculture in Italy. The data refer particularly to the wine producing sector: 61% of the producers use Internet in their activity; 85% are willing to invest in the use of informatics technology for cultivation and 18% (and increasing) use smart phones and tablets in the field. Moreover, 17.9% of those interviewed agree that Internet is an endless encyclopedia, a necessary ally to help improve their professional know how.
These results clearly show that wine growing and production is a sector significant first of all for its cultural value, then for the economical side. Just think how much a territory like the UNESCO heritage listed Val d’Orcia has to offer: towns rich in art and history, an uncontaminated countryside, natural paths through woods and hills like the famous Francigena route; well-known spas, gastronomic traditions as well as wines of excellent denomination such as Brunello of Montalcino and the young emerging Orcia.
